The Mushroom village got its name from the many thatched roofs. It is a collection of around fifty houses perching to the hillside next to the famous rice-terraces. As you can see, they have satellite dishes, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that they are more well off than they look. Most of the children here did not attend school, and we met people with acute needs for medical attention. The sewage was free-flowing in the narrow alleys between the houses and the pigs were feeding of it and happily bathing in it. Yunnan is China’s poorest province and it is certainly on the radar when Beijing discusses how they can bridge China’s increasing income-gap.
